Walt Disney Concert Hall

Disney Hall

I have seen my share of Gehry buildings and this is his most refined and beautiful. Of course, Bilbao remains a more powerful work in historical context (and it is in a much more romantic setting), but in terms of pure forms, I think Disney Hall surpasses it.

Other Gehry buildings on Figure/Ground:
DZ Bank, Experience Music Project, Fisher Center, Guggenheim Bilbao, Stata Center and Vitra Design Museum and Factory.

Other LA-area architecture on Figure/Ground:
Eames House and Caltran District 7 Headquarters.

I work in the REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/Calarts theater), which is a hidden secret in the Walt Disney Concert Hall. (We are a contemporary avant-garde experimental theater, blah blah blah...) I can tell ya, Gehry's building might look good, but the inside spaces are not functional AT ALL! I have worked here since the opening of the building, and we still have not stopped complaining about all the problems we have encountered. For example, all the restroom counter tops are made of stainless steel, of course. The faucet Gehry's firm chose to use are those motion sensor ones, which the faucet company specifically said "no stainless steel counter tops". So for many months patrons and staff alike had to struggle with the faucet in order to wash their hands. We finally had to change all the faucets out of our own budget. This is only one of the things, we have had to replace or replace just about everything! Someone needs to tell Mr. Gehry and/or his design team that design needs to meet function!
